| On the evening of February 8, 2012 St. Mary's County Volunteers were dispatched to an apartment fire with a report people trapped. The fire was located in the 45900 Block of Fox Chase Drive in Great Mills. First arriving EMS units on the scene determined that a male described as "Handicapped" lived in the apartment and was unaccounted for. Units from the Bay District VFD arrived on scene and started Search and Rescue operations. After a short period of time the missing subject was located. Despite the fire departments best efforts the victim had already succumbed to his injuries. The fire is being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshall's Office.
